World Vision (WV) began working in Rwanda in 1994 as millions of people fled the country during the genocide. WV provided emergency help to those displaced, and care for unaccompanied children, and then helped people resettle as they returned home. Since the year 2000, WV established long-term solutions to poverty and injustice as a new means of empowering the communities that we work with.
WV Rwanda’s Education and Life Skills Technical Programme (TP) is designed to ensure that the most vulnerable child receives quality education; that an orphan feels cared for and a child with a disability received access to appropriate facilities to study; that the drop-out to has a second chance to learn and acquire a technical skill; and that all girls get to enjoy their right to education. WV Rwanda is committed to the implementation of a strategy that promotes sustainability, puts ownership of beneficiaries at the centre of all activities, and empowers all stakeholders to serve children and address their needs.
To achieve the Education and Life Skills TP’s objectives, WV Rwanda uses the following models: Learning Roots, Unlock Literacy, and Youth Ready. Additionally, the following cross-cutting issues are adhered to:
a. Child protection and participation: By the means of Child Protection and Advocacy (CPA), Citizen Voice and Action (CVA) and Celebrating Families to ensure children are safe to learn, participate, grow, and develop.
b. Disability: Children with disabilities are among the most vulnerable and efforts are made to ensure they access assistive devices.
c. Peace-building: Using a Peace Road curriculum to ensure peaceful coexistence that promotes good learning for children.
d. Gender: Addressing the causes of vulnerabilities for children especially the girls in order to promote gender equity and gather segregated data to ensure both boys and girls are having equitable and quality education.
e. Environment: School based activities that address environmental protection, disaster reduction and healthy living.
