The Teachers union (SNER) was established in 1996 and was published as a legal entity in the official gazette of 15 June 2001. SNER was a union of primary teachers and other professionals working in the education. It has currently 45,451 effective members. In the official gazette of the Republic of Rwanda of 13 October 2014, SNER has changed its constitution to align itself with the new structure of education in Rwanda. As a result, the union has changed its name to Rwanda Teachers’ Union (SNER) to unite all teachers from nursery to secondary in Rwanda and look after their welfare and professional interests as well as defend their rights. SNER also promotes educational development generally and the teaching profession in particular.

SNER is a member of Rwanda Trade Union Confederation (CESTRAR), member of Education International (EI), Member of the Federation of East Africa Teachers’ Union (FEATU). It also has partnerships with DLF/ Denmark and LO/FTF Council. In the country, it has partnerships with government institutions like MINEDUC, MIFOTRA, and MINEAC.

The vision of the Teachers Union is to become one of the most effective and autonomous in the world.

Its mission is to bring together teachers from different grades to quality service, to strengthen their defense and protect their rights, improve their living conditions in terms of socio-economic and professional and to promote quality of Education.
