Mwana Nshuti (Child My Friend) began in 1998 to restore dignity and a sense of belonging to vulnerable youth and to equip them with practical and employable skills. It is one of many projects of Urugo rw’Amahoro (Friends Peace House), a Rwandan NGO whose mission is to promote peace, reconciliation, and holistic development among the Rwandan people. The vision of Friends Peace House and Mwana Nshuti is to see people living together in good relationship with one another in healthy, well-developed communities. At Mwana Nshuti in Kicukiro, Kigali students study Hairdressing or Automechanics and at Mwana Nshuti in Katarara, Bugesera students study Sewing. All students also study Swahili, English and Social Studies. Both schools have active graduate student associations with a salon and sewing co-operative respectively. Friends Peace House also runs peace trainings in mediation, counseling, trauma healing and alternatives to violence, as well as training community savings groups and running a conservation agriculture pilot program.
